Why 200 Young Tanzanians Took to the Streets—and How Picking Up Trash Became a Step Toward Peace
Hello everyone,
Have you ever noticed litter scattered along the streets on your way to work or school?
Many of us simply walk past it, assuming someone else will take care of it.
To be honest, I've had the same thought myself.
However, on the other side of the world in Tanzania, a group of young people chose a different path.
More than 200 young people took to the streets on a weekend morning, picking up litter and carrying fire extinguishers as part of the campaign.
At first, you might be wondering:
What do street cleanups and fire safety education have to do with peace?
The
answer was found not in grand gestures, but in simple acts of service.
🌱 200 Young Volunteers Creating
Change, One Street at a Time
On April
25, Mwenge Street in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, was filled with a special sense
of purpose.
More than 200 young volunteers and local residents joined the Peace and Safety Integration Program organized by IPYG (International Peace Youth Group).
The first
activity of the day was plogging.
Plogging combines jogging with picking up litter, promoting both health and environmental responsibility.
Carrying
garbage bags, the young volunteers walked around the Mwenge intersection and
nearby bus stops, cleaning litter from the streets.
To some, a single piece of litter may seem insignificant.
Yet when small actions come together, they can transform the places where we live and work.
After all, keeping our surroundings clean begins with caring for the people who share them with us.
🕊 Peace Is Closer Than We Think
The message behind the program was clear.
“Promoting Peace Education and Ensuring Safety” (Article 10 of the DPCW)
DPCW stands for the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War.
Article
10 emphasizes spreading a culture of peace through education and public
participation.
At first, the word "peace" may sound like something too big or far-reaching.
This event made me think differently about what peace really means.
Peace doesn't always begin with grand changes.
It begins with caring for our surroundings, looking out for our neighbors, and being prepared to help one another in times of need.
Small
actions like these seem to be what build a peaceful society.
🧯 From Cleaning Streets to
Protecting Lives
After the cleanup, participants took part in a practical safety training session.
Led by
the disaster management NGO Dingonet, the training focused on fire extinguisher
use and emergency response skills.
* Pull the safety pin and aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.🧯
* They also learned how to stay calm and evacuate safely in smoke-filled situations.
By using
fire extinguishers themselves, the young volunteers learned how to respond in
emergency situations.
Peace is not simply the absence of danger.
It also includes the readiness and willingness to protect one another during difficult situations.
Watching the young volunteers participate so earnestly reminded me how meaningful even small actions can be.
🤝 A Community Effort That Made a
Difference
What made this event especially impactful was the collaboration behind it.
Youth
organizations, the University of Dar es Salaam, Kinondoni Municipal Council,
the World Environment Organization, and Coca-Cola all joined forces for the
initiative.
Environment,
safety, and peace.
Though they may seem like separate issues, they ultimately share the same goal.
Creating a world where people can live more safely and warmly together.
And at the heart of every meaningful change are people's intentions and actions.
💌 Small Actions Can Spark Big
Change
The actions of these 200 young Tanzanians leave us with an important question.
What small change can I make today?
The
answer may be closer than we think.
It could be picking up litter, checking on someone's safety, or simply taking better care of the spaces around us.
They may seem small, but together they can make a big difference in someone's life.
It begins
with the everyday actions of ordinary people.
What is one small action you can take today to make a positive difference?
