Why Did Romania’s Former President Send This Message to Chairman Lee Man-hee? His Emphasis on the ‘Rule of Law’ and ‘Truth’

Hello, everyone! 😊

Today, I’d like to share a somewhat unusual international story with you.

Did you know that a former president of Romania sent a message to Chairman Lee Man-hee?

What makes the message even more noteworthy is that it went beyond simply offering words of encouragement.

What stood out in his message were four key principles: human dignity, the rule of law, judicial independence, and a fair and impartial legal process.

So why did a former head of state choose to emphasize these principles?

Today, rather than taking sides, I’d like to take a measured look at the meaning of the message, focusing on what was reported in the article.

🌍 An Unexpected Message from Romania’s Former President

Let’s start with Emil Constantinescu, former President of Romania.

Constantinescu served as Romania’s third president.

In his message to Lee Man-hee, Constantinescu first offered words of comfort regarding the “very difficult time” Lee is currently going through.

But the message did not end with words of comfort.

He emphasized respect for human dignity, the rule of law, judicial independence, and the principle that the truth should emerge through a fair and impartial legal process.

There is one point here that stands out.

The point is that the former head of state did not make a direct judgment on guilt or innocence in a specific case, but instead emphasized the principle that the truth should emerge through a fair legal process.

It struck me as a point worth reflecting on for anyone looking at the case.

⚖ The Real Issue: Not Who Is Right, but How Judgment Is Reached

In fact, isn’t this one of the hardest things about considering a legal case?

We may first encounter a case through news reports or online posts, but the final judgment should ultimately be reached through proper legal procedures.

This is especially true when a case has generated significant controversy in society.

Some people may view Chairman Lee Man-hee and HWPL positively, while others may have a completely different perspective.

That is precisely why the important question is whether, despite differing views, the case can be judged according to the same laws and procedures.

I think this is the point at which former President Constantinescu’s message deserves our attention.

🌉 A Message Highlighting the Need for Dialogue and Reconciliation

Another key theme he emphasized was dialogue, reconciliation, and international cooperation.

According to the article, former President Constantinescu conveyed the view that today’s world needs leaders and organizations that can promote dialogue, reconciliation, and international cooperation.

He also noted Chairman Lee Man-hee’s efforts to promote world peace and mutual understanding among people, expressing hope that Lee would be able to continue those efforts once this difficult period has passed.

There is one important distinction to make here.

The former president’s positive assessment of HWPL’s peace activities is a separate matter from any legal judgment in the ongoing case.

Peace activities can be assessed on their own merits, while legal judgments should be made separately through the proper legal process.

I believe this distinction is particularly important.

👨‍ Another Voice: A Message from a Former Judge of the Constitutional Court of Romania

The article also introduces another figure from the legal community.

He is Petre Lăzăroiu, a former judge of the Constitutional Court of Romania.

He is reported to have offered words of encouragement to Lee Man-hee in a video message.

In particular, he reportedly encouraged Lee by saying, in essence, that even if others tell lies, the truth will eventually come to light, adding, “I hope you will continue to trust and rely on God to the very end. Good will prevail in the end.”

Of course, this should be understood as his personal message and perspective.

 This raises another question.

What does “truth” mean when it is invoked by someone with a legal background?

And ultimately, through what process should that truth be established?

🔎 Three Key Points That Stood Out in This Message

While reading the article, three key themes particularly stood out to me.

① Human Dignity

It is the principle that human dignity should be respected throughout any legal process.

② The Rule of Law

It is the basic principle that cases should be judged according to law and due process rather than personal preferences or public opinion.

③ A Fair and Impartial Process

It can be understood to mean that the same principles and procedures should apply to everyone, rather than standards that favor or disadvantage any particular person.

When these three ideas are brought together, one question remains.

Are we really looking at the case through a fair and impartial lens?

🌱 How Should We View Perspectives from Abroad?

One interesting aspect of this story caught my attention.

What stood out to me was that a former head of state and a legal professional from abroad were offering their perspectives on a case that has largely been viewed through a domestic lens in Korea.

Of course, messages from foreign public figures cannot replace the judgment of the Korean courts.

Nor can the facts or legal responsibility in the current case be determined solely on the basis of their statements.

Nevertheless, I think it is worth noting that figures with international experience chose to emphasize principles such as the rule of law, fair legal process, and human dignity.

Especially in highly controversial cases, what we need may be an even calmer and more measured perspective.

💭 The Question We Are Left With

As I read these messages, I found myself thinking about a question that goes beyond simply taking one side or the other.

“Can I apply the same legal standards to someone I do not like?”

And conversely, “Can I apply those same standards to someone I support?”

Perhaps this is where one of the greatest challenges in upholding the rule of law lies.

Fairness cannot be reserved only for those on our side; the same principles must also apply to people we may dislike or feel uncomfortable with.

🕊 Final Thoughts

A message from former Romanian President Emil Constantinescu to Chairman Lee Man-hee.

And words of encouragement from Petre Lăzăroiu, a former judge of Romania’s Constitutional Court.

People may view these two messages differently.

Some may focus on the positive assessments of his peace activities from abroad, while others may pay more attention to the messages about the rule of law and due process.

Rather than rushing to decide who is right or wrong, I hope this article gives us a chance to reflect on what principles should guide us in establishing the facts and reaching a judgment.

What did you think as you read these messages?

Among “human dignity,” “the rule of law,” and “a fair process,” which idea stood out to you the most?

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. 😊
