When I came across the news about HWPL's recent Peace Teacher Training Orientation, it made me pause and reflect.

When we talk about peace, we often think of governments, politics, or diplomacy.

But what if real peace begins much closer to home than we imagine?

Perhaps it starts in the classroom, where children learn, grow, and smile.

 

At this event, educators from countries that have endured more than three decades of war and conflict shared why peace education was so important.

Why do they consider peace education one of the most important educational priorities for future generations?

🌍 Why Teach Peace in a World Still Filled with Conflict?

 

On April 21, HWPL held its Peace Teacher Training Orientation under the theme of "Peace Teachers: Stories Shared in the Classroom."

The online event brought together 100 educators from five countries—Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, and Pakistan.

 

Despite their different nationalities and cultures, they all shared one common goal.

They wanted to teach the next generation the values of coexistence over conflict and dialogue over confrontation.

 

Today, wars, conflicts, hatred, and division continue to affect many parts of the world.

That is exactly why so many educators agreed that peace education is more important than ever.

  

📚 What Is the HWPL Peace Teacher Training Program?

 

Can teachers really change the world?

 That may sound a bit ambitious.

 But many of us can remember a teacher who changed our perspective and inspired us to dream bigger.

 

The HWPL Peace Teacher Program helps teachers develop the skills needed to teach students the values of respect, empathy, consideration for others, and open communication.

HWPL also provides free educational materials, including textbooks and video lectures, and its peace education program is now being implemented in 112 countries around the world.

 🤔 So, What Does Peace Education Actually Teach?

 

Many people assume peace education simply means telling children not to fight.

In reality, it goes far beyond that.

Students learn to respect people with different ideas, backgrounds, and cultures.

They learn to resolve disagreements through dialogue rather than violence or blame.

 

✅ Fostering Global Citizenship

They learn how to live together despite differences in nationality, race, and religion.

 

✅ Strengthening Empathy

They develop the ability to understand and care about others' perspectives.

 

These are life skills that remain valuable well into adulthood.

 

💬 A Powerful Message from an Educator Who Lived Through 30 Years of War

 

One of the most memorable moments came from an educator in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He shared that he had lived in a country affected by war for more than three decades.

 

He went on to say:

"Some people believe that war is the way to achieve peace. But there are so many other ways to build peace."

Those words made me pause and reflect.

 They reminded me that while some of us take peace for granted, for others it remains a deeply cherished dream.

 

 

🌱 Small Changes in the Classroom Can Change the World

 

Children grow by learning from the adults around them.

 When children learn respect, they become respectful adults. When they learn kindness, they grow into caring adults. When they learn dialogue, they become adults who solve conflicts peacefully.

 

That is why peace education is more than just another school subject—it's an investment in the future.

 

Perhaps that is why educators from around the world continue to come together across borders and languages. 

A small change that begins in the classroom can ultimately transform communities, nations, and even the world.
