YEPW Citizens' Dialogue in London: The Safe Communities Project for Preventing Hate Crime

Today, I'd like to share an inspiring international story that has stayed with me for quite some time.
These days, we often come across news about
conflicts and hate crimes that arise from differences in religion, race, and
culture.
This made me wonder:
How can we better understand one another and build safer, more inclusive
communities?
Recently, I came across a meaningful initiative in London, where young people and citizens are working together to find answers to this very question.
Today, I'd like to share the story of the
third Citizens' Dialogue held as part of the "Safe Communities
Project" organized by IPYG UK's YEPW.

Citizens' Dialogue in the UK: Exploring the Root Causes of Conflict Together
The dialogue was held both online and offline on February 21 at St. Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace in London, bringing together 101 participants.
Citizens from more than ten cities across the UK came together to discuss the underlying causes of hatred and social conflict.
The key issues they identified were social
isolation, misinformation, and a lack of peace education.
This point really made me stop and think.
When we don't truly know each other, misunderstandings can easily arise, and people are often judged based on unverified information.
Perhaps the first step toward reducing
conflict is simply having conversations that help us understand one another.
One message from the dialogue stood out to me in particular.
It emphasized that diversity is not something that divides society, but rather the foundation of a healthy and resilient community.
It was heartwarming to see people from
different backgrounds and perspectives come together to share their thoughts.
The goal was not to erase differences, but to find ways for people from diverse backgrounds to live together harmoniously.
That process itself felt like the beginning of peace.

Communities Begin with Dialogue
Participants did more than just listen.
They shared personal experiences, discussed local issues, and participated in workshops focused on reconciliation and effective communication.
The effort to understand different perspectives and build trust within the community was especially impressive.
A safe society is not created by one
person alone; it grows through small acts of connection, care, and mutual
concern.
✍ A Signature from the Heart
One of the most memorable moments was the signing of the Peace Culture Leadership Declaration.
Co-Chair Davy Jacob Dominic Beko and Manager Nazma Abdi signed the declaration, reaffirming their commitment to building a culture of peace.
One statement from Nazma Abdi particularly
stayed with me.
“I signed not
only with my hand, but also with my heart and mind.”
To me, this felt like more than a signature—it was a sincere promise to take action for peace.
Participants also signed the Civic Record,
expressing their commitment to contributing to peace in their communities.
Hearing this story from London made me reflect on the role each of us can play in building peace.
Perhaps peace does not begin with grand declarations, but with small moments of human connection.
I believe there are small acts of peace
that we can all practice in our daily lives.

different perspectives
● Thinking twice before judging someone
online.
When these small actions come together,
they can help create safer and more welcoming communities for everyone.
