Young People United Through Sports 🌿 IPYG New Zealand Hosts ‘Youth Peace Sports Day’
Hello everyone!
While news headlines are often filled with stories of conflict and division, I recently came across a heartwarming article that reminded me there are also stories that bring people together.
It was about IPYG (International Peace Youth Group)'s “Youth Peace Sports Day,” held in Auckland, New Zealand—the beautiful country known for its breathtaking natural landscapes.
As I read the
article, I found myself smiling as I imagined young people laughing, playing,
and connecting with one another.
Although I wasn't there in person, the photos and stories showed how something as simple as a ball can become a powerful bridge—breaking down barriers and bringing people closer together.
Today, I'd like to share this inspiring story of peace from New Zealand. 🌏
🧶 Weaving
People Together: A Youth Peace Story from New Zealand
According to the report, a special event took place on April 18 at Synergy Sports Centre in New Lynn, Auckland.
It was IPYG New Zealand's "Youth Peace
Sports Day."
This event was inspired by IPYG New Zealand's 2026 slogan, "Whiria Te Tangata," meaning "Weaving People Together."
What stood out to me was that the slogan comes from the Māori language and culture.
It beautifully reflects people from different cultures and backgrounds lowering the walls of prejudice and naturally connecting with one another through the familiar space of sports.
Perhaps this is one of the most meaningful
ways to learn what peace truly looks like.
🤝 The
Courage to Reach Out First
One
message from the event stayed with me as both a teacher and a parent.
Gemma
Palmer, Youth Advisor of Tuia Waitakere, emphasized the importance of having
the courage to approach new people.
She shared that stepping outside our
comfort zone is often easier than we imagine.
As I read those words, I naturally found myself thinking of our children.
Children often hesitate when meeting new friends or stepping into unfamiliar situations.
In those moments, what they need most is not perfect preparation, but the courage to take the first step.
Saying hello first or simply joining in may seem like a small beginning, but those small steps can build meaningful relationships and eventually lead to greater understanding.
⚽
Teamwork and Respect Shined Brighter Than Competition
The event began with icebreaking activities organized by the youth organization Mixit.
Participants
then formed teams and enjoyed futsal and volleyball matches together.
What stood out most was that this was much more than a sporting event.
Rather than competition, the event
emphasized the experience of cooperation, teamwork, and mutual respect.
One participant shared that it was a wonderful experience to play sports and connect with new people.
It wasn't about winning—it was about connecting with one another. When I think about it, isn't that one of the most beautiful powers of sports?
🥖 A
Community Working Together for Peace
Another thing that stood out to me was the incredible support from the local community.
This event was not made possible by a single organization alone.
Youth groups, community organizations,
sports centres, and local businesses all joined forces to support the event.
What I found especially heartwarming was that even small contributions, such as providing refreshments and offering venue support, came together to make the event possible.
The saying, “It takes a village to raise a
child,” naturally came to mind. Seeing a community come together to encourage
and support young people as they grow gave me much to reflect on as both an
educator and a parent.

Reflections on Peace Through Sports in New Zealand
An IPYG representative described sports as a practical tool for peace that allows young people to interact without prejudice.
Reading this story made me reflect on the meaning of peace.
Peace may not always be found in grand declarations or complex discussions.
Sometimes peace begins in simple
moments—being on the same team, passing a ball, learning each other's names,
and sharing time with smiles.
I hope we can offer children not only words about getting along, but also real experiences of meeting different people and creating things together.
I sincerely hope that the warm movement
shown by New Zealand's young people—"weaving people together"—will
continue to spread and reach even more communities around the world. 🌿
