500 People, One Field: How HWPL’s Interfaith Sports Festival Brought Religions Together for Peace in Zambia
Hello everyone!
What comes to mind when you imagine people of different faiths gathering on the same field to play tug-of-war and soccer together?
You might expect awkwardness or even rivalry at first.
But recently in Zambia, Africa, a very
different scene unfolded.
A special sports event brought together people of different faiths and generations, as well as members of local communities, who laughed, played, and built a spirit of unity as one team.
So, what story of peace unfolded in Zambia?

Zambia’s Interfaith Sports Festival: A Celebration of Unity
On June 6, the HWPL Zambia Branch hosted a special Interfaith Sports Festival at the sports field of Jotham Muleya Secondary School in Emmasdale, Lusaka.
The event was organized to foster unity, inclusion, responsible citizenship, and peaceful coexistence through community participation, in line with Zambia’s national values and principles.
Around 500 people took part in the event,
including officials from the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious
Affairs under the Office of the Vice President, representatives from the
Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and the Drug Enforcement Commission, as well
as religious leaders, young people, students, and local residents. Their
participation added further significance to the event.

Mattered More Than Winning Was Being Together
Participants were divided into Blue and White teams regardless of their religion or background.
What mattered was not who won, but how participants cooperated and communicated with one another along the way.
Several events especially stood out for the
enthusiasm of the participants.

As participants passed the baton, they also
shared the message that the responsibility for peace must be passed on to
future generations.

Cheers and encouragement echoed across the
field as participants naturally came to understand one another and built
friendships.
An HWPL Zambia representative described the event as follows:
“This was more than just a sports event. It
was designed to give participants the opportunity to experience peace firsthand
through the process of moving and working together.”

Turning Dialogue into Action
What made this event even more meaningful was that it built on an interfaith dialogue and arts program held in April.
While the earlier program focused on
listening to and understanding one another, this event took the next step by
building trust through shared activities.
Religious leaders encouraged young people
to take the lead in fostering harmony within their communities.
They also emphasized that addressing violence and conflict is a shared responsibility for all members of the community, not just any one organization.

Small Miracle on the Playing Field
Even after the event ended, many participants stayed behind.
They exchanged contact information, shared their experiences, and continued connecting with one another.
Perhaps the real achievement was not the results of the games, but the new connections and trust that had formed.
The HWPL Zambia Branch said it plans to
continue carrying out a variety of peace initiatives and community programs to
promote interfaith harmony and youth participation.
